BG451838523 Mine is working well powered by a 9VDC adapter from 120VAC mains. The adapter is rated at 600mA.

BG451838523 Consider increasing the voltage. That 5.5 VDC at 2.1A specification may be an overly optimistic minimum. I power mine with a 9V adapter from mains, rated at only 210mA, and it works well.

BG451838523 Yes, the 7 dashes should come up initially to show that the device is working, then in a moment or two the frequency (or cycle) should display. Although the On-OFF button looks like it should power on-off the device, that is not its purpose. Is is designed for selecting whether you want to display the frequency or the cycle. I suspect the switch itself is indeed a surplus SPDT switch manufactured to be an on-off switch but repurposed for this device. As you discovered, the device turns on as soon as the power is connected. Oh, and if you power up the device but don't provide a signal for it to measure, the dashes will continue to be displayed. If you have connected a signal to the device but still get dashes, it could be a fault with your signal.

BG451838523 Iagree that the hinges are simple but if you tighten them firmly they are quite strong. Yes, it is a cheaply designed product, yet can hold items fairly securely in nearly any position. I have used one for several years, and just ordered 5 more. I wish there was a larger-sized version available for heavier-duty tasks.

BG451838523 Ifound that to be the case as well, but in using this item for several years now I have usually pushed the magnifier down out of the way. Nice to have the odd time, but it's the "hands" that I find invaluable.

BG451838523 Yes! Banggood, please ask your supplier to make a version that is twice as large, for holding heavier items securely.

BG451838523 Ifind that if you crank down the wingnuts hard then they will hold tight. It is quite tipsy even so. If the base had a flat protruding extension then it could be clamped down securely.
