Q: what are the use-cases for this sort of device? I see them advertised a lot and they are obviously popular but would be good to know some real world examples of usage.

BG335546123 Transmit short messages (like GPS, sensor readings, text messages) hundreds of meters or sometimes 1km+ between two devices (nodes), and "hop" even longer distances if you have several nodes connected in a mesh. Your phone can pair with a node over Bluetooth and send messages through the Meshtastic app to another phone paired with a distant node, totally bypassing the cellular network, as long as you have a path for the signal to hop.
