It works pretty well for vacuuming gravel and also for moving water for water changes in a basic aquarium. I used it to suck diatoms off the sand bed. Be careful about keeping the plastic housing and motor above the water line - on the third use, I must have dipped the motor too low and when I went to use it the next time, everything was corroded and would not turn on. At these prices, I just ordered another one as a replacement.
