clan 12:1is the ratio between the distance and the diameter (or circumference (that is a bit unclear)). The reading areas is cone shaped. The further away the larger area is read. The is a small hard to read label on the side of the thermometer which gives 3 examples. One is 75mm @ 900mm So at 12 cm the measured area is 1 cm. This is common for this type of IR thermometer and in my case is perfect for readning surfaces (pans mostly) in my kitchen.
