This is a major step up over the <$10 irons I've used in the past. I'm a hobbyist, I've not got a lot of experience with expensive kit so it is impossible for me to compare but for my purposes this is absolutely great. It heats up almost immediately, has a load of configurable functions and has made short work of everything I used it on, including soldering heavy guage cables to a large ground plane. Really excellent for that we have access to affordable equipment that performs as well as this.
