Although the unit is designed for manual positioning, I aim to add a motor for positioning and use a micro-controller to control everything. Adapting the unit for motorized positioning seems relatively straightforward. At this stage, I just have one-dimensional movement, but I plan to move to a two-dimensional X-Y setup fairly soon. My goal with this project is mainly learning, rather than producing a serious production machine, but it should be an interesting project. Along the way, I will be able to try out lots of ideas I’ve had over the years. I am particularly interested in exploring effective software control techniques. This is a much neglected area of commercial CNC equipment and aligns well with my personal interests. At the very least, I should be able to do much better than standard PID controllers! It will also give me a test bed for trying out many mechanical devices, such as routing, pick-and place, etc., not to mention something closer to my heart: the application of automation to horticulture. This is an industry that is over-represented in repetitive simple tasks that should readily benefit from automation. There’s a lot more to do here than irrigation! In summary then, I am a novice at this stuff, but I am looking forward to several months of interesting project work. With a bit of luck, I might have a useful tool or two at the end of it, but more important to me is that I will have learned a lot about this field and will then be able to apply that knowledge to future work
