There is an off/on switch inside them, that you have to open before use. +They light in dark they charge in sun. They work for 5 hours. They have an impressive flame effect, with 6+6 almost orange leds. Not for light up an area but for decoration. -A bit small. -The battery is Ni-mh as other users said. ++I am satisfied with the product.

I ordered 36 of these generic 12 LED solar torch lamps. They arrived about two weeks later, carefully packaged individually boxed. I set all of them up and found no defects. There were no instructions for setting these up, but I learned all the details for setting them up on YouTube videos. Each of these lamps must be activated before use by turning the switch to on. The on switch is located on the bottom inside of the solar panel. You must first remove the top solar panel with a counter clockwise twist, pull assembly out of the fixture. You then remove the white light defuser tube with a counter clockwise twist, and you will see a tiny on off switch and the LED tab. Upon throwing the switch, verify the lights work by covering the solar panel with your hand. Leave the switch on and reassemble before planting your lamps. These lamps are very unusual and have much more aesthetic appeal then typical dull white solar lamps. They make a lovely fiery neon glow, and I may order another set, to replace any that wear out over many years of use.

I'm very pleased with it. It's not dark yet, but it's got a strong flame.
