I used one of these units to replace an old failed rheostat from a laboratory magnetic stirrer/heating plate. The unit now works flawlessly, and at around 1/10 to 1/20th the cost of a replacement rheostat I'm very happy. Works well as an AC motor speed adjuster for an unloaded motor. Would probably work really well for a pedestal fan speed adjustment if you aren't happy with the 3 speed gale-force settings normally supplied, or a bathroom extractor fan. Some retrofitting will obviously be required. Would also work well as a dimmer adjustment for lights.
